How to Choose the Right Bandsaw Blade for Wood
The best bandsaw blade for wood is not necessarily the most expensive one—or the one with the most teeth. It is the one that matches the cut.
A narrow, flexible blade can follow a tight curve through plywood. A wide, coarse blade can track straight while resawing an eight-inch hardwood board. Ask either blade to do the other one’s job and you are likely to get heat, wandering and frustration.
To choose the right blade, consider:
- The cut you are making
- The type and thickness of the wood
- The tightest radius you need to cut
- The blade dimensions your saw can safely run

1. Choose the Right Blade Material
For most woodworking, the first decision is Flexback or Hardback Carbon. The other options are designed for more specialized work.
Flexback Carbon
Flexback Carbon combines hardened teeth with a flexible back. It handles the repeated bending and twisting of contour cutting while remaining an economical choice for everyday woodworking.
Choose it for curves, general cutting, plywood, composite wood products and a mix of ripping and crosscutting. If you want one versatile woodworking blade, this is usually the best place to start.
Hardback Carbon
Hardback Carbon is stiffer than Flexback, helping it resist deflection and track straighter under feed pressure. Choose it for straight ripping, resawing and thicker stock where stability matters more than tight turning ability.
Furniture Band
Furniture Band is a heavier .032-inch carbon blade with an aggressive tooth design for controlled curves in thicker wood. It is a strong choice for furniture parts such as Queen Anne legs, curved table components and cabinet work where a Flexback blade may not provide enough stability.
Quicksilver Wood Mill
Quicksilver Wood Mill blades use coarse, resharpenable teeth to clear heavy chip loads during deep cuts. They are designed for stationary and portable sawmills, log breakdown and large timber—not general workshop cutting.
Carbide Tipped
Carbide-tipped blades offer excellent wear resistance, cutting speed and edge life in dense hardwoods, abrasive woods, composites and high-volume resawing.
They cost more initially, but fewer blade changes can make them worthwhile in demanding applications. Use clean stock: nails, screws and other foreign objects can chip the carbide tips.

2. Match the Blade Width to the Cut
Blade width is measured from the tip of the tooth to the back edge of the blade. Narrow blades turn tighter; wide blades track straighter.
The rule is simple:
Use the widest blade your saw can safely run that can still cut the radius you need.

These figures are approximate. Blade thickness, tooth set and machine setup can affect the practical radius. Never install a blade wider than the saw manufacturer recommends.
3. Choose the Correct TPI for the Wood Thickness
TPI means teeth per inch. It controls the balance between cutting speed, chip clearance and finish.
- Lower TPI: Larger teeth and deeper gullets clear sawdust quickly, making them better for thick wood and resawing.
- Higher TPI: Smaller teeth can leave a smoother edge in thin material but cut more slowly and have less room for sawdust.
As a general rule, keep at least three—and preferably closer to six—teeth in the wood during the cut.

Here is where people often go wrong: more TPI does not automatically mean a better finish. In thick wood, fine teeth can pack with sawdust before they leave the cut. The result is extra heat, slower cutting and a blade that wants to wander.
Wood species and moisture also matter. Thick, soft or green wood generally needs a coarser pitch and more room for sawdust. Thin hardwood or plywood may cut more cleanly with a finer pitch.

4. Consider the Tooth Shape
Tooth shape affects how aggressively the blade enters the wood and how effectively it clears sawdust.

| Hook/skip tooth | Soft or green wood, aggressive ripping, resawing and thicker stock requiring greater sawdust clearance |
Where both styles are available, we generally recommend hook tooth. Its positive rake provides efficient cutting and good sawdust clearance. Skip tooth serves a similar purpose and is still produced in some configurations, but hook tooth has replaced it in most of the wood-cutting blades we currently carry.
Tooth shape is often built into the blade material and TPI combination, so it may not appear as a separate choice in every configuration.
5. Confirm the Blade Length and Machine Requirements
The right cutting specifications will not help if the blade does not fit the saw. Confirm the exact length and supported width before ordering.
You can usually find the blade length:
- On the saw’s data plate
- In the owner’s manual
- On the manufacturer’s website
- On the current blade or its packaging

To measure an existing blade, mark one point and roll the complete loop along a tape measure until the mark returns to the starting position. Measure twice: custom-welded blades are manufactured to the length you provide.
Benchtop and Three-Wheel Bandsaws
Small benchtop and three-wheel bandsaws commonly have wheels around 10 inches or less in diameter. Because the blade bends more sharply around those wheels, these saws generally require a thinner, more flexible band.
